Massage Therapy

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is the most common type of massage therapy. The therapist focuses on the skin and superficial layers of muscles. This technique improves circulation, relieves muscle tension, and reduces mental stress. Massage oil is often used.

Tui Na (Chinese Massage)

Traditional Chinese Massage (Tuina) has a 2000 year old history. It uses the meridians and acupoints as the basis for treatment. Utilizing pushing, kneading, pressing and pinching techniques, Tuina is effective against neck, shoulder, and back pains as well as tendonitis and fasciitis.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. Myofascial Release and Trigger Point Release usually become a part of the treatment. It usually begins and ends with Swedish Massage. However, the most therapeutic middle portion resembles Traditional Chinese Massage. Hence, it is also effective at relieving neck, shoulder, back, and leg pains.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical technique that uses needles to stimulate specific points on the body, called acupoints, to achieve therapeutic effect. Acupuncture is used to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain, and improve overall health.

Combination of Acupuncture and Massage

The combination of acupuncture and massage is very popular in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is one of the most effective treatments against stiff neck and shoulders, back pain, arthritis, sciatica, and frozen shoulder. The two techniques amplify each other's effectiveness, producing much more pronounced results.

FAQ

Why should I choose a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT)?
  • All RMTs must pass the BC registration exams set by the College of Massage Therapists of BC (CMTBC).
  • RMTs honour a strict code of ethic set by the CMTBC, which ensures that patients receive safe, competent, and ethical care.
  • Only services provided by RMTs are covered by extended health care plan.
Does my extended healthcare plan cover acupuncture and massage therapy?
The majority of extended health care plans cover treatment from registered acupuncturists and massage therapists without requiring a doctor’s referral. Please contact your insurance company for details.
Do I need to change clothes to receive massage therapy?
For Swedish massage, because oil needs to be applied, the skin needs to be exposed. Chinese massage or Deep Tissue massage do not require the client to change. However, direct skin contact achieves the best results.
Which type of massage therapy should I choose?
If you’re focused on relaxation, Swedish Massage is the best choice. If you’re looking for a treatment against muscle pain, deep tissue massage is the best. If you want to avoid changing clothes, the traditional Chinese massage is the choice for you.
Should I choose acupuncture or massage therapy?
Massage is best for relaxing both the muscles and the mind. Acupuncture is effective against pain, especially ones that are difficult to cure through other types of treatment. For most people, a combination of massage and acupuncture achieves the best results.
